Boosting and Burying Product Search Results
Boosting is a multiplier that allows administrators to promote/demote the position of products in the search results.
Imagine it’s coming to the end of the year and there is excessive inventory of a product that needs to be cleared out to make room for the new season’s inventory. Administrators can enter a boost value to help push the product up on the search result pages.
The Boost Value along with the Condition(s) is used to increase or decrease the relevancy score of the matched search results which in turn promotes or demotes the position of the results. Any boost value between 1.01 and 999 is used to promote the position and any value between 0 and 0.99 is used to demote the position.
This field only supports positive integer values, except 1 and floating-point numbers with a maximum of two digits after the decimal point. When a value in an incorrect format is added OR invalid value is added, display a validation message below the field: Boost Value between 1.01 and 999 or 0 and 0.99 is required
Note: It is recommended to use boost values with one digit after the decimal point to demote the position of search results with more accuracy. Also, boost value 1 does not promote or demote the position of products therefore boost value 1 can be ignored.
Note:
- Along with the Boost Value, different factors play into the search relevancy score of a product and therefore the position of products on the search results page. Administrators can experiment with different values to achieve the desired result.
Examples:
- Ex. 1- Product A is added with the boost value 100 then this does not mean that the product will always be displayed on the top of the search results page, this only means that the position of the product is promoted. It could have the first position in search results or any other position but definitely, the position will be higher than the original position (i.e. position before any boosting value was applied)
- Ex 2- Suppose if 2 products say X and Y are added with the boost values 0.01 and 0.02 (to demote their position on the search results page), then this does not mean that Y is displayed above X, this only means that the position of X is demoted more than the position of Y since the boosting value of Y is greater.
Steps to create a Boost and Bury Rule
Administrators can follow the below-mentioned steps to create a Boost and Bury Rule:
- Select the Catalog on which the condition needs to be applied.
- Click Add New
- Specify a unique Rule Name, Start Date, and End Date rule.
- Specify the trigger conditions to define when the rule is applied.
OR
Select Apply To All Search For The Catalog checkbox to enable boost and bury preferences irrespective of any trigger keyword.
Specify the boost and bury conditions for different Item Values (also known as Keywords) with Boosting Value.
Note: This field supports only positive integer values and floating-point numbers with a maximum of two digits after the decimal point between 0.01 and 999. Any value between 1 and 999 can be used for boosting (i.e. to promote the position of products in search results) and any value between 0.01 and 0.99 for burying (i.e. to demote the position of products in search results) the position of results.
- Click Pause to stop the rule. Click Restart to re-apply any paused rule.
